Kiran Chetry was born on August 26, 1974 in Patan, Nepal to Hom and Nancy Chetry. Kiran’s mother, a Ukrainian-Dutch with some German ancestry, met Hom, a Nepalese, while volunteering with the Peace Corps in Nepal. Little Kiran was only seven months old when she and her family emigrated to the United States.
As a child, Kiran grew up in Maryland where she attended Montgomery Blair High School in Maryland. She was an active member of student government. After high school, Kiran Chetry went to the University of Maryland College of Journalism, where she studied for a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism. She was a member of the Alpha Pi chapter of the Delta Delta Delta sorority.
Her career began in 1995 when she was hired by WICU-TV in Erie, Pennsylvania as an anchor for health-related issues. Her future husband, Chris Knowles, was also working at WICU-TV at the time.
Kiran’s big break came in 2001, when she got an offer to join cable television station Fox News Channel as a news reporter and general reporter. During her six years at Fox News, she was an anchor for Fox News Live, Fox & Friends First, and then the weekend morning news program, Fox & Friends Weekend.
After a contract dispute in 2007, Kiran jumped ship to CNN where she co-hosted American Morning, with Anderson Cooper 360, Paula Zahn Now, CNN Newsroom and Errol Barnett, a CNN International news show

Kiran and Chris first met while working at WICU-TV. At the time, Kiran was a new reporter who had just been hired as a reporter. Chris Knowles, meanwhile, was a meteorologist who had risen to become an established prime-time news anchor for the station.
They fell in love, got married and the union was blessed with two children.
