Kim Raisner Horse Punch

German modern pentathlon coach and trainer Kim Raisner was disqualified from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games for “appearing to strike the horse Saint Boy, ridden by Annika Schleu (GER), with her fist during the Riding discipline of the Women’s Modern Pentathlon competition.”

The world governing body for modern pentathlon, the Modern Pentathlon federation (UIPM), said in a statement: “The UIPM Executive Board (EB) has given a black card to the Germany team coach Kim Raisner, disqualifying her from the remainder of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

“The EB reviewed video footage that showed Ms Raisner appearing to strike the horse Saint Boy, ridden by Annika Schleu (GER), with her fist during the Riding discipline of the Women’s Modern Pentathlon competition.

“Her actions were deemed to be in violation of the UIPM Competition Rules, which are applied to all recognised Modern Pentathlon competitions including the Olympic Games.

“The EB decision was made today at the Tokyo Stadium before the resumption of the Men’s Modern Pentathlon competition.”

The light punch came after Schleu, who was heading into the show jumping round with a commanding lead, was trying to get Saint Boy to respond to her commands. But the horse was obstinate.

Raisner was heard on video urging Schleu to hit the horse with her riding crop to get it to comply. At one point, Raisner lightly punched the horse once above its back leg. Schleu ended up scoring zero points in the show jumping segment, finishing the competition in 31st place.

On August 13, 2021, after German pentathlon competitor Annika Schleu was caught on camera whipping and trying to force the terrified horse Saint Boy onto the course during the Tokyo Olympics, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), urged Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), to eliminate all equestrian events from the games.

PETA also noted two incidents in the equestrian eventing competition. Jet Set, a horse ridden by a Swiss competitor, was injured so badly that he had to be euthanized, and an Irish competitor forced a horse named Kilkenny to finish the course even though he had blood pouring from his nostrils.

PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement: “The Olympic Games showcase human athletes, not the ability to terrify and injure horses who don’t choose to compete yet are doing all the work, sometimes at the cost of their very lives. Just as the games have evolved to include modern sports like skateboarding, PETA is calling on the International Olympic Committee to relegate abusive equestrian events to the history books.”

“Today’s competition in riding in the modern pentathlon was partially characterized by scenes that damaged the image of the sport,” the German Olympic Committee said in a statement to CNN. “Numerous recognizable excessive demands on the horse, and rider combinations should be an urgent reason for the international association to amend the rules. It needs to be changed so that the horse and the rider are protected. The welfare of the animal and fair competition for the athletes needs to be the focus.”
