Kim Carnes’ distinct vocal style, distinguished by a raspy sound, has earned comparisons to Rod Stewart. “Chasin’ Wild Trains,” her most recent studio album, was published in 2004. Carnes still lived in Nashville and wrote music in 2017.
Carnes had participated in a number of partnerships and initiatives prior to launching her solo career. She received her first publishing contract with producer Jimmy Bowen in 1962. During this time, she worked on demos with other renowned songwriters such as Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and J.D. Souther.
Carnes’ early career also included performing “Nobody Knows,” a song written by Mike Settle that aired at the end of the 1971 film “Vanishing Point.”
She also made her songwriter debut with “Sing Out for Jesus,” which was sung by Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton, who appeared in the same film.
Under Bowen’s direction, Carnes and Mike Settle joined once more in 1971 to form The Sugar Bears, a bubblegum pop studio group. They released “Presenting the Sugar Bears,” an album that includes the single “You Are the One,” which peaked at No. 83 on the Billboard charts.
Carnes and her husband, Dave Ellingson, co-wrote numerous songs with David Cassidy, who was then a worldwide idol at the height of his popularity, in the early 1970s. Carnes toured the world as an opening act for Cassidy, accompanied by her husband.
