He is also famously known as the author of three full-length books: a novel, Long Division (2013), and two memoirs, How to slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America (2013) and Heavy (2018).

Kiese’s 2018 memoir, Heavy, deals with his difficult relationship with his mother, who introduced in him a love of reading and discipline and skill in putting the pen down to paper, but who was in a bullying relationship and lived on very little wage, and who beat Kiese with the explanation that he needed to be tough for a white world that would roughly treat him as well as his resultant unhealthy relationships with food and gambling.
