She enjoyed acting from a young age, and, after finishing middle school, was sent to a neighboring county to perform labor work. After passing several exams, she became an artist soldier in Tibet until she was 17 years old. Ling mostly appeared in musical theater in Tibet, but had a brief stint working as a military nurse. She spent time in a mental institution after a rape that led to an abortion, and once she was out of the hospital, she began working as a professional actress in stage productions. Her feature film debut came in the mid-’80’s film “On The Beach”. In the early ’90s, Ling moved to the United States to study at New York University, and became a citizen by the end of the decade. Since then, Ling has appeared in “The Crow”, “Red Corner”, “Anna and the King”, “Dumplings”, “The Beautiful Country”, and “Shanghai Baby”. Ling starred in several music videos, including Chris Isaak’s “Please”. In 2005, she posed nude for “Playboy” and later scored a part on VH1’s “But Can They Sing?”, where she attracted attention for her provocative performances of “Like a Virgin”, “I Touch Myself”, and “I Wanna Be Sedated”. Ling made headlines in 2008 for her arrest at Los Angeles International Airport after she stole magazines and batteries, resulting in a fine. Ling, who is openly bisexual, appeared on an episode of “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew”, in 2011, which discussed her battle with alcoholism.
