Kevin began his career at Silicon Graphics(SGI) as the product manager of Virtual reality browser Cosmo Player. Hartz was also a co-founder of ConnectGroup. This was a startup providing high-speed internet access to the hotel industry. However, the company was acquired by LodgeNet five months later.

Later on, Kevin co-founded an international money remittance business named Xoom in 2001. He later served as the CEO until 2005 and also as one of the Board members.
