Born May 27, 1978, in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States, Hartwell attended Cheyenne High School where he played for the school football team.
After high school, Hartwell committed to Western Illinois University where he played for the Western Illinois Leathernecks football team.
Following his collegiate career, Hartwell was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round of the 2001 NFL Draft and stints with the Ravens till 2004.
During his professional career, Hartwell had a stint with Atlanta Falcons (2005–2006), Cincinnati Bengals (2007), Oakland Raiders (2008), and Las Vegas Locomotives (2010).
Hartwell tied the knot with American actress Keshia Knight Pulliam on January 1, 2016, in Pulliam’s Atlanta home.
After the former couple announced that they were expecting their first child on July 17, 2016, Hartwell filed for divorce on July 25, 2016.
Their daughter, Ella Grace Hartwell, was born on January 23, 2017, before their divorce was finalized in April 2018, with Knight Pulliam receiving primary custody of Ella while Hartwell was ordered to pay child support of about $3,000 a month.
