Kenya Flag: Its Meaning, Colors, Designer and Symbolism of Its Elements

The Kenyan flag “Bendera ya Kenya” (Bendera ya Kenya) was adopted on December 12, 1963, the day Kenya became an independent state.

It was largely influenced by Kenya’s pioneering political party, Kenya African National Union (KANU). KANU was the only Kenyan political party to govern for 40 consecutive years before being defeated in the 2002 elections.

Notably, Kenya’s African National Union party led the fight for freedom and independence in Kenya.

Before the 2002 elections, the party split into two factions, which is why the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) was formed, under whose umbrella Mwai Kibaki won the elections.

The party’s flag closely resembles the flag of Kenya. The only difference is the different emblems used on them.

The flag of KANU has 3 equal horizontal rectangles design in black, red and green. While there is an emblem of a white rooster at the center of the flag, the national flag bears the traditional Kenyan Masaai emblem. The rooster in the middle of the shield symbolizes the beginning of a new day.

On the occasion of the nation’s independence in 1963, the party’s flag wanted to be automatically made the national flag. The then Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Thomas Joseph Mboya, objected to the attempt. So the slight change in both flags.

Kenya’s national flag is also one of the African flags, succeeding the Ethiopian and Pan-African flags.

The national flag is a symbol of authority. So much so that it has its place on all Kenyan military flags. It is usually located in the top left corner of the flag.

The Defense Forces Flag; Air Force Flag and the Naval Ensign of Kenya all have a miniature of the national flag on them.

Kenya Flag Designer

Kenya’s flag was designed with a scale proportion of 2:3. The designer’s name is not known. The year of the draft is speculated to be in the course of the independence struggle as it originated with KANU, the political party credited with Kenya’s independence victory. After Kenya’s independence, there was a need for a flag and although this caused some controversy, the canoe flag was slightly redesigned to match that of the newly formed country and police were ordered to arrest anyone disobeying the flag.

The flag is divided into 3 horizontal and parallel stripes. The three-colored stripes are equal in length and width.

The top stripe is black; followed by the middle red stripe and the green stripe below.

The parallel red stripes are disturbed by 2 thin white stripes above and below. The 2 white fimbriations and the Maasai shield were added after the nation gained independence.

In the center of the flag is the image of a tricolor (black, red and white) traditional Maasai shield and two white spears. The Maasai Shield is red in color with black flanks, 4 white charges, and a white disc in the center.
