Kenya Barris was born to his parents mother Tina Barris and father Patrick Barris. Kenya and his siblings were raised by a single mother.
Barris is one of Hollywood’s best contemporary storytellers. In addition to being an actor, producer, and director, he is most known for creating the ABC sitcom “Black-ish” (2014–2022).
The widely praised “Black-ish” is just one of the many television programs that Barris has created. The award-winning series also has two spin-offs, “Grown-ish” and “Mixed-ish,” as well as a third potential spin-off, “Old-ish.”
He also contributes writing to “The Game,” “Girlfriends,” and “Soul Food.” Along with Tyra Banks, he also co-created and produced “America’s Next Top Model.”
Aside from that, he wrote the film “Girls Trip.” He co-wrote the 2019 theatrical release “Shatt” screenplay and co-produced the 2019 film “Little.”
In the Netflix series “BlackAF,” which he created and co-starred Rashida Jones and Iman Benson in, Barris made his acting debut in 2020. Barris said he would write, produce, and direct a biopic on comic Richard Pryor for MGM in October 2020.
Moreover, a contemporary remake of “The Wizard of Oz” under the direction of Barris was announced in August 2022.
Kenya Barris Parents Tina and Patrick
Kenya Barris has witnessed his parents, Tina Barris and Patrick Barris get divorced at age five. Kenya is the second-youngest of four children in the Barris family.
Barris has always been devoted to his mother, Tina, who primarily raised him and his three siblings by herself in the impoverished South Central Los Angeles neighborhood of Inglewood. His parents named him after Kenya due to his father’s visit to the country.
Due to Barris’ father’s physically abusive nature, his mother, Tina, divorced him when he was five. After losing a lung in an industrial accident, Barris’ father received a settlement six years later.
Half of the funds were used to support the kids, allowing Tina and the kids to enter the middle class, integrating Hancock Park, and paying for Barris’ tuition at a private school. Barris went to Clark Atlanta University and initially pursued a career in medicine.
But after briefly attempting stand-up comedy, he realized that writing was his true calling. After earning a degree in radio, television, and film, he eventually returned to Los Angeles and worked as a production assistant. As a staff writer for TV shows, Barris soon found consistent work.
Kenya Barris Father Patrick was Violent by Nature
Patrik was a General Motors factory worker and was abusive toward his wife. Due to that, his wife filed for a divorce and started living separately from him.
The small family relocated to a new home when Barris was six. The plan was that the kids’ abusive father wouldn’t be able to find them; when he did and tried to break in, Barris’s mother used a revolver to try to stop him.
However, he approached her, prompting Tina to fire five times at him. Barris was present to see it. Barris’ father was hit once in the stomach that evening before he fled. Tina moved with the kids to New York for a year because she was too terrified of the father to file charges.
Later, Kenya’s mother took him to a counselor out of concern that her kid would be negatively affected by what had happened.
Kenya was Raised by A Single Mother Tina
Barris has always had a great deal of admiration for the single mother who reared him and his siblings in impoverished Inglewood, California. He shared in the New Yorker that his mother was a “man and a woman.”
He also said that when Tina escaped an abusive marriage, divorced, lost her home in a fire, her young son passed away from leukemia and cancer while in bed. She still had four children to raise.
Tina did not, however, ever accept welfare. She supported her children by working three jobs while studying for the real estate broker’s exam and selling for Mary Kay, Amway, and the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company.
Tina finally invested in low-income real estate, collecting the rent herself while concealing a sub-nosed weapon in her pocket for security.
Even though Tina put forth a lot of effort, those were difficult financially. Treats were few and far between, carefully saved for, and then treasured. As a young child, Barris saved enough cash for a pair of unique sneakers he subsequently cleaned with a toothbrush.
When Tina had enough spare change in her money box, she bought a new bike for Barris as a surprise. Afterward, everything changed when Barris’ father suffered a lung injury in a chemical accident, and the family received the payout.
Tina used her share to relocate the children to a residence close to Hancock Park. The youngster, who was then on the verge of entering his teens, was able to enroll in private school due to the seismic transition from what Barris terms “ashy to classy.” He now resides in a wealthy San Fernando Valley neighborhood in California.
