Did Kento Momota Met An Accident?
In 2020, a van transporting Japan’s Kento Momota, the world’s No. 1 men’s badminton player, collided with a truck, killing the driver and injuring three other passengers, according to authorities.
Momota had recently won the Malaysia Masters men’s singles when he was involved in an accident. Yu Hirayama, a Japanese coach, and Akifumi Morimoto, a Japanese trainer, were also on board, as was William Thomas, a British technical adviser for the Badminton World Federation.
The van collided with the back of a 30-ton lorry hauling sand on a highway on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur at around 5 a.m., killing the 24-year-old Malaysian driver, according to the Fire and Rescue Services Department. The passengers were sent to Putrajaya, the federal administrative capital, for treatment.
According to a representative from the Malaysian Badminton Association, Momota and the others were on their way to Kuala Lumpur International Airport when the tragedy occurred. The Japanese were on their way to Tokyo, whilst Thomas was on his way to Jakarta.
At the hospital, the badminton champion and those involved in the accident received a steady stream of well-wishers, including Malaysia’s former world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei and Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s wife.
