She was born on March 17, 1995, in Redcliffe, Australia to Sholto McKeown and Sharon McKeown.
In 2010, Taylor won her first national titles in the 100m and 200m breaststroke at the age of 15. She won multiple medals and represented Australia at many junior teams events.
In 2013, Taylor McKeown moved out of home at the age of 17 to follow her coach as he relocated from her hometown.
McKeown made her first major international meet appearance at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and won the 200 breast gold in a new best time of 2:22.36. She followed that performance that year with a bronze medal at the 2014 Pan Pacs, where she touched a 2:22.89. After 2014, she became a mainstay on the Australian national team, helping her country win 2015 and 2017 World Championship bronze and a silver medal in the 4×100 m medley relay during the 2016 Summer Olympics.
McKeown also represented Australia in both the 100m breaststroke, and 200m breaststroke, qualifying fastest for the final and finishing in 5th in the 2016 Summer Olympics. She is a University of Sunshine Coast student.

She settled on the Gold Coast in early 2019 training with her new coach Michael Bohl. After only a few months under her new coach, Taylor won the 200m breaststroke at the Australian Trials.
On August 3, Taylor McKeown, 27, announced her retirement from the sport. She concluded her career by competing at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she placed sixth in the finals of the 200 breast.
Taylor’s younger sister Kaylee McKeown is still actively competing in the sport. Kaylee is the world record holder in the 100-metre backstroke and a three-time Olympic champion.
