Kathy Young (born October 21, 1945) is an American artist who came to prominence as a teen pop singer during the early 1960s, when her version of “A Thousand Stars” peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 at the age of 15. Young is a native of Southern California, having been born in the county capital of Orange, Santa Ana. Kathy first came to public attention in 1960, when producer Jim Lee of Indigo Records selected Sun Valley-based band The Innocents to perform backing vocals for her on a cover version of The Rivileers’ 1954 song of “A Thousand Stars.” Kathy went on to become a household name. Lee had arranged The Innocents’ debut on Wink Martindale’s pop music television programme two years before, and he was the driving force behind their success. Kathy Young and The Innocents reached the top of the R&B Singles chart in December 1960, only two months after her 15th birthday, and reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1961.
“Happy Birthday Blues,” Young’s follow-up single, reached at No. 30 on the Hot 100 chart in 1961. In the following years, other songs, such as “Magic Is the Night” and “The Great Pretender,” did not rank in the Top 40. Young made a guest appearance on DJ Alan Freed’s widely known American road show in July 1961. In 1962, she joined Jim Lee’s Monogram Records label, where she recorded solo and with Chicano rock vocalist Chris Montez, among others. While still a teenager, she saw that her once-promising career was coming to a grinding halt and decided to go to London in 1964. The next year, she married American singer-songwriter John Maus, alias John Walker, who was the founding member of the Walker Brothers, well remembered for their 1966 hit song The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore. It lasted from 1965 to 1968 that she was married to Maus. Kathy returned to the United States in 1969, and they were remarried two years later. During the following twenty years, she raised her children and assisted in the management of the family citrus ranch in Central California’s Central Valley. Following a return to Los Angeles in 1994, she started working for a large multinational corporation while simultaneously resuming her previous love, music, which she had abandoned years before. During the 2000s, he appeared in a slew of rock concerts at locations such as the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and the Izod Center at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in New Jersey, among others.
