Originally from Leicester, Kasabian (pronounced kse-bi-n) is an English rock band that was established in 1997. The band’s founding members were singer Tom Meighan, guitarist and vocalist Sergio Pizzorno, guitarist Christopher Karloff, and bassist Chris Edwards. The band’s first lineup consisted of the following musicians: Drummer Ian Matthews joined the band in 2004 after a series of session drummers had been used by the band before to that. Karloff quit the band in 2006 and went on to form the new band Black Onassis, which is still active today. Jay Mehler joined the band in 2006 as the touring lead guitarist. In 2013, Mehler departed the band to join Liam Gallagher’s Beady Eye, which he founded. Kasabian are widely regarded as one of the most accomplished British bands of the twenty-first century, and they were awarded the Q Award for ‘Best Act in the World Today’ in 2010. They are well-known for receiving high praise for their live performances, and have been awarded ‘Best Live Band’ at many award ceremonies during their career. Despite the fact that the band’s music is often referred to as “indie rock,” Pizzorno has said that he “hates indie bands” and does not believe Kasabian falls into that category. They have released five studio albums: Kasabian (2004), Empire (2006), West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum (2009), Velociraptor! (2011), and 48:13 (all of which are available on iTunes) (2014). The band’s sound has been compared as a cross between The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, with a dash of Oasis swagger thrown in for good measure. In addition to many accolades and media acclaim, including a Brit Award in 2010 for Best British Group, their live performances have garnered widespread praise, the most noteworthy of which being their participation as headliners at the 2014 Glastonbury Festival in the United Kingdom.
