Karly-Marina Loaiza (Uchis) is an American Singer. She was born in Virginia on July 17, 1994.
Kali Uchis is also a songwriter, record producer, and music video director. She writes and produces most of her music by herself.
When she was young, she used to write a poem and also used to play the saxophone in a jazz group during high school.
Kali Uchis Family Background
Kali Uchis was born in Virginia but she spent her childhood in Colombia before her family moved back to America. Her parents are Colombian.
When Kali’s father moved from Colombia to America, he met Kali’s mother in the 1980s. At that time, her mother was previously married to another person and also had a child.
When Loaiza was in high school, her father moved back to Colombia to care for his mother.
In the summer, Loaiza lived in Colombia with her father, Uncle, and aunt. And during the school year, she lived with her mother and older sibling. Kali Uchis experienced most of her upbringing in Virginia and spent time with her parents, who were native to Colombia.
Her parents were from a middle-class family, so they could not afford for her to be admitted to a better school. So she used to study in a school near to her house.
When Kali was in high school, She frequently skipped classes to spend time at the photo lab and making experimental short films. In her late teens, she did mixed media collaging art and video editing/directing for work as her interest, so Karly-Marina Loaiza was given the nickname by her father “Kali Uchis.”
It is difficult to know about the biography of Kali’s parents. It is said that Kali’s father was one of the famous snake catchers of the Irula tribe. He used to catch snakes and sell them to fulfill the family’s basic needs.
Kali Uchis was thrown out of her house by her parents at the age of 17 because of breaking her curfew. She lived out of her car for several months, staying with her friends when she could and working in a grocery store to fulfill her basic needs.
Uchis always had a rebellious streak that first started to cause problems when she began skipping class in high school in order to spend time making experimental short films and making her own music.
In 2012, during her last year of high school, people in the music industry noticed Kali when she released her debut mixtape. Since then, she has built a career making music inspired by various musical styles.
She has also released a song inspired by Billie Holiday over a Ralfi pagan instrumental which premiered on Billboard in November 2014. In April 2017, Kalis’s song Humanz was released as Gorillaz’s fifth studio album, which included songs that feature Uchis. In these songs, Uchis is named “She’s My Collar” and the bonus track, “Ticker Tape ”.
Kali has been nominated twice for the Grammys award and once for a Latin Grammy award in October 2017. On April 6, 2018, she released her first album, Isolation which includes songs like Body language, Miami, Just a stranger, Your teeth in my neck, Death to me, and many more.
The Spanish Language album includes collaborations with Latin music stars like Tainy and Jhay Cortez and it was also considered a risky move for an artist based in the United States, especially Kali Uchis who had built up a fan base of English speakers.
The musician Kali Uchis has previously shown how her father was one of her first inspirations while talking with BBC. In 2018 while talking with BBC she mentioned that her father used to manage apartments and complexes as well as a lot of people and when the people would leave the apartments, they would also leave their old music or CD behind.
And Uchis’s dad used to bring her little boxes of CDs sometimes. Where she got inspired by the songs of American singers and producers.
Kali Uchis Relationship
The difficulties that have faced by Uchis made her open up to it through music as well as she was able to make her music more popular.
Kali Uchis has already been in a relationship with Omar Apollo and Yung Gleesh. Yung Gleesh was a rapper and in 2015 he was accused of assaulting a lady after a night out in Austin, where his career had been damaged due to allegations.
Yung Gleesh broke up with Uchis after he saw the picture of Uchis and Apollo at a pool party which Apollo posted in his Instagram account. Omar Apollo is a songwriter.
Kali and Omar were working on the same project i.e., Hey Boy, which was released in October 2020 and connected with each other through it.
In 2021 they collaborated to share a new track, “Bad Life,” which was released in November 2021. According to Apollo, the central theme of Bad life was putting energy into a relationship and not wanting anything in return.
But in an interview, Uchis revealed that she has never been romantically involved with Omar Apollo.
After the ups and downs in her relationship, Kali has become so inspired to focus on her career rather than the relationship and she also released the album Solita which really inspired her to be a successful woman.
Don Toliver and Kali Uchis collaborate to release the music video for their joint single Drugs N Hella Melodies. A month later, on Friday, July 23, 2022, Don revealed that he and Kali were dating. On July 12, 2022, Kali wished a birthday to Don Toliver on social media with sweet words.

Kali Uchis is eager to contribute towards her Colombian society. She also Tweeted that she is dedicating herself to spending time with her family and giving back to Colombia these next weeks.
