Richard Kalan Porter (born November 11, 1985) is a Canadian singer-songwriter who is from Medicine Hat, Alberta. He was the season 2 winner of the reality television series Canadian Idol, in which he competed against other contestants. He began singing at a young age and has had classical training, having learned to play a variety of instruments, the most notable of which are the violin and viola. Many of his compositions include violin solos that he composes and arranges.
In addition, Porter’s first song, “Awake in a Dream,” is the best-selling debut single by a Canadian artist to date, having been certified 8x Platinum by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA). In addition, he is the most successful solo Canadian Idol performer. He is now enrolled as a student at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.
