For his unforgettable performance as Prior Walter in Mike Nichols’ film adaptation of the book Angels in America, American actor Justin Kirk shot to prominence. For this performance, he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy, but Jeffrey Wright ultimately took home the prize for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie.
Kirk portrayed Andy Botwin, a well-known character, in the television show Weeds. Sadly, Fox canceled the procedural drama series APB after the first season, just as Kirk took up the lead role.
However, he continued to make waves in the entertainment industry, and in 2021 he had an appearance in the “What It Takes” episode of the HBO series Succession. Kirk’s brief appearance on television as the controversial and right-wing online provocateur Jeryd Mencken made a significant impact.
Because of how well-praised his portrayal was, he returned to play the part in Succession’s fourth season in 2023. Kirk claims that Jeryd Mencken isn’t based on a specific person, but GQ magazine has noted that his role on the program is equally as significant as a series regular.
