In the legendary ITV soap opera Coronation Street, Julie Goodyear, an experienced English actress who was born Julie Kemp on March 29, 1942, gained notoriety for playing Bet Lynch. Prior to joining the company officially in 1970 and remaining with it until 1995, she made her acting debut as Bet in 1966 for a brief nine-episode run.
Goodyear also appeared in eight episodes in 2002 and seven episodes in 2003. At the 1995 National Television Awards, she was given the Special Recognition Award in recognition of her great work on Coronation Street. She received the designation of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 1996 New Year Honors.
Goodyear was born in Bury, Lancashire, to parents George and Alice Kemp. Her parents split when she was six years old, and her mother eventually remarried William Goodyear, a man she admired. After her grandmother tragically drowned when she was thirteen, Goodyear’s grandmother, Elizabeth Duckworth, reared her. She attended St Anne’s Academy in Middleton.
Despite the ups and downs of her on-screen career, Goodyear is most recognized for her role as the vivacious bartender Bet Lynch in the British serial opera Coronation Street. She was initially cast in 1966, but Pat Phoenix (who played Elsie Tanner) advised her to leave the show for a while so that she could pursue more training.
