She already knew how her character’s story arc would conclude and had a year’s worth of work planned. In an interview with The New York Times, Margulies revealed that another reason for leaving ER was her desire to protect her character from certain story changes that had occurred in later years.
She believed that when she wasn’t cast in George Clooney’s role, her character become unduly fixated on sexual relationships, going against the research she had done to play an only child. She expressed sorrow over the growth of her character and the diminished complexity of the part.
Margulies’ choice to leave ER was met with criticism, but she stood by it, citing the need of continuing to work on her acting skills and honoring her commitments to playwrights and directors.
