Julia Catherine Donaldson MBE (born 16 September 1948) is a British writer, dramatist, and actor who served as Children’s Laureate from 2011 to 2013. She was awarded the honour in 2011. Most famous for her renowned rhyming tales for children, particularly those illustrated by Axel Scheffler, such as The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, and Stick Man, she is also recognised as a children’s author. Although she began her career creating music for children’s television, she has shifted her focus to writing children’s books after the lyrics of one of her songs, “A Squash and a Squeeze,” were turned into a children’s book in 1993. 64 of her 184 published works are readily accessible in bookstores, making her the author with the most publicly available works. The remaining 120 are designed for classroom use, and they contain her Songbirds phonics reading system, which is a component of the Oxford Reading Tree, as well as other resources.
