Joy’s Camp, named after Joy Adamson, is built on the site of Joy’s tented home in Shaba National Reserve. It was also the home of Penny the leopard, the heroine of Joy’s last book, Queen of Shaba. In the eastern corner of the Samburu ecosystem, Shaba is a secluded idyll, an arid landscape dotted with lush springs and rocky river gorges.
The camp overlooks a large natural spring where elephant and lion share watering rights with herds of buffalo and the rare desert species of Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe and Grew’s zebra. The nearby Ewaso Nyiro river and gorge provide striking sites for bush meals and sundowners, or scenic breaks during game drives or walks.
There are 10 spacious en-suite tents, made up of 7 doubles and 3 twins, with verandas giving views of the surrounding hills or the spring. Each tent is sumptuously decorated with Boran and Somali cloths, handmade glass and the vibrant fabrics of the local nomadic tribes. Extra beds can be added for children.
The camp has a small museum of Joy Adamson memorabilia, on loan from the Elsa Trust. Joy’s Camp combines a glimpse of Kenyan history with an authentic wildlife experience. Conde Nast Traveller Magazine included Joy’s Camp in their Hut List of 2007. The camp is eco-friendly and has attained Ecotourism Society of Kenya’s silver award.
