Journalist Shireen Abu Akleh Story, What Happened To Her and Family Background

Israeli troops shot Abu Akleh in the head when she was on assignment in Jenin, occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

On Wednesday, Abu Akleh, a longstanding Al Jazeera Arabic TV correspondent, was slain while documenting Israeli army incursions in Jenin, in the northern occupied West Bank.

Israeli forces shot Abu Aqleh, 51, deliberately and “in cold blood” while she was documenting disturbances in the Jenin refugee camp, according to a Qatar-based TV program.

Who Is Shireen Abu Akleh? Wikipedia

Shireen Abu Akleh was a Palestinian-American journalist who worked for Al Jazeera’s Arabic-language channel for 25 years before being assassinated on 11 May 2022 while covering an Israeli Defense Forces raid on Jenin in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

She was slain by Israeli soldiers, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, but Israel claims she was killed in a firefight with Palestinian terrorists.

Abu Akleh was born in Jerusalem in 1971 to a Palestinian Arab Christian family from Bethlehem. She studied architecture at Jordan University of Science and Technology after finishing high school in Beit Hanina.

She eventually transferred to Jordan’s Yarmouk University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in print journalism. Abu Akleh returned to Palestine after graduation.

Shireen Abu Akleh Died While Reporting In The Crossfire of Palestinian Terrorists

Shireen Abu Akleh was likely killed by Palestinian gunfire, according to Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. The assault also injured another Al Jazeera journalist, producer Ali al-Saudi, according to the channel.

Abu Akleh was wearing a press flak jacket when she was shot, according to an AFP photographer. The photographer saw Israeli forces firing in the area before discovering Abu Aqleh’s body on the ground.

When Abu Aqleh was killed, no Palestinian militants were visible in the area, according to the AFP photographer. The Israeli army stated that an operation was carried out in the camp early Wednesday, but categorically denied that a reporter was targeted.

The army said suspects and security officers exchanged fire, and it was examining the incident and looked into the likelihood that journalists were injured by Palestinian militants.

A Cold Relation Between Israel And News Media

Relations between Israeli forces and the media, particularly Palestinian journalists, are tense. While reporting demonstrations in the West Bank, a number of Palestinian journalists were injured by rubber-coated bullets or tear gas.

In 2018, Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian journalist in Gaza who was filming violent protests along the Gaza border. Although Israelis have long criticized Al Jazeera’s reporting, authorities normally allow its journalists to operate freely.

During Israel’s war with Gaza’s Islamist Hamas authorities last year, an Israeli airstrike demolished the building in Gaza City that housed The Associated Press and Al Jazeera’s offices.

Another Al Jazeera reporter, Givara Budeiri, was briefly held during a protest in Jerusalem last year and treated for a fractured hand, which her employer blamed on rough police treatment.
