Josh Risdon Biography

Josh Risdon (Joshua Robert Risdon) is an Australian professional footballer born on 27th July 1992 Bunbury, Australia. He plays as a right back for Australia national football team and Western Sydney Wanderers. He was awarded 2011–12 Perth Glory Most Glorious Player, and 2015-016 PFA A-League Team of the Season. He was among the Australia’s 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

He began his youth career at ECU Joondalup, WA NTC from 2007 – 2009. He began his professional career with Perth Glory in 2010 and made hsi professional debut on 28th November 2010 against North Queensland Fury. At the age of 19 he was named as a regular player for the club during the 2011-012 season.

Josh Risdon Wanderers

On 1st July 2017 he was signed by Western Sydney Wanderers at the start of the A-League season.  After earning a spot in the Socceroos side in 2015, the 25-year-old found himself out of the squad a year later as World Cup qualification started to heat up.

Desperate to reclaim a green and gold jersey, Risdon made the bold choice to leave Glory, a club he had been with for seven seasons, in pursuit of a new challenge that could revitalise his national ambitions. That challenge was the Wanderers and a pre-season under Tony Popovic – a coach that turned Risdon into one of the fittest and fastest defenders in the country.

While he would get only a pre-season with Popovic, the foundations were laid for a successful personal season for Risdon, even if the club were destined to struggle. With three assists, 77% tackle success and 72% passing accuracy, Risdon regularly caught the eye across is 18 appearances for the Wanderers.

Recalled to the Socceroos squad for both crunch play-offs against Syria and Honduras, Risdon’s move to Western Sydney immediately paid dividends and he hopes to have done enough to secure a World Cup spot.

“Big goal of mine when I came to the Wanderers was to get back into the national squad and I obviously got involved in those last two qualifiers and the last two friendlies under the new coach so fingers crossed I can get in,” Risdon told Goal at the Dolan Warren Awards.

After being included in Bert van Marwijk’s first squad for friendlies against Norway and Colombia, the signs are looking good for Risdon. Part of the side that kept a determined, albeit fortunate clean sheet against Colombia, the right back savoured that particular match up and working under the new coach.

“Really enjoyed that camp working under him, good to work with different coaches and different nationalities – you learn different sorts of aspects of coaching. Really enjoyed playing the second game against Colombia, it was probably the sort of opposition we’ll be playing against at the World Cup,” he said.

Josh Risdon Salary

Perth Glory have announced a contract extension for home-grown Socceroo Josh Risdon ensuring the talented Bunbury born defender stays in WA until the end of the 2016/17 Hyundai A-League season. Risdon’s one-year deal means the 23-year old will spend a seventh season with Perth Glory FC, since making his Hyundai A-League debut in the 2010/11 season.

“I’m very happy to be staying with the club and it’s capped off a great year for me already” Risdon said.

“Right now my focus is to be playing well and to be playing regularly. Playing for my home-town team ticks all those boxes”.

Coach Kenny Lowe was delighted that Risdon was staying on for another year.

“I’ve known Rizzo for a long time and I’m very happy he’s staying with us for a bit longer” Lowe said.

“He’s an important part of what we want to do and it will help us drive forward with the goals we’ve set”.

Risdon, considered to be the best right back in the country, will be the ninth Western Australian born or raised player who will don the Glory jersey next season. His contract extension comes on the back of his Socceroos call up for this month’s World Cup Qualifiers against Tajikistan and Jordan and last week he was crowned the South Western Times Sports Star of the year.

Currently he is the fourth most capped Glory player in A-League history and has captained the team on game-day for nine matches this season. Risdon could lead the team out again on Saturday night when Glory hosts Central Coast at nib Stadium. A win against the tenth placed Mariners will help Glory cement its spot in the top six.

“I guess there’s no better place to be, except for the honeymoon, after a wedding,” Risdon told media on Tuesday at the Socceroos’ training camp in Kazan on Tuesday ahead of Saturday’s World Cup opener against France.

The 25-year-old was still unsure of being named in Bert van Marwijk’s final 23-man squad for Russia when he left his wife the day after their wedding for a pre-World Cup training camp. Having previously admitted he “didn’t think it would be so hard to leave my wife that soon after”, Risdon made sure his “sacrifice” wasn’t all for nothing.

“Obviously that was always in the back of my mind, when we planned our wedding, that it was going to come around the time of the World Cup. We were fully prepared that we might have to wait to have our honeymoon. My wife was fully supportive and knew the sacrifice that I was willing to make, and she was as well. So the honeymoon’s on hold, but after this is all done or dusted I’m sure we can have a couple of weeks to celebrate that. It’s an exciting time for myself, obviously getting married and now the World Cup. It’s been a big six weeks for me. I’m just trying to soak it in… because it’s a fantastic time in my life and I’m just trying to enjoy it.” Josh Risdon said.

Ebony said that it was part of the demanding life of a footballer.

“We had the day which was very special and a few hours the next day before we had to drop him at the airport, so I was sad to see him go, but you have to be pretty flexible. It’s been a long road and lots of
ups and downs, but he made it and obviously just very excited to get over there and support him.”

Rising Socceroos star Josh Risdon puts life on hold in pursuit of World Cup glory

It has been a whirlwind couple of weeks for Socceroos defender Josh Risdon after jumping on a flight to Australia’s World Cup training camp in Turkey the day after his wedding. The newlyweds were forced to put their honeymoon plans on hold after Risdon was selected for the Socceroos preliminary World Cup squad.

His sacrifice has paid off after he was named by coach Bert van Marwijk in Australia’s final 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Risdon’s new bride Ebony Risdon says that is part of the demanding life of a footballer. “We had the day which was very special and a few hours the next day before we had to drop him at the airport, so I was sad to see him go,” she says.

“But you have to be pretty flexible.

“It’s been a long road and lots of ups and downs, but he made it and obviously just very excited to get over there and support him.”

Risdon was plucked out of the A-League and thrust onto the international stage in 2015 by former Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou. Since then it has been a bumpy ride for the Western Sydney Wanderers defender, who struggled to hold down a regular spot in Australia’s starting XI.

But now it seems the tide has well and truly turned for the 25-year-old after his performance in the Socceroos’ 4-0 win over the Czech Republic caught the eye of new coach Bert van Marwijk. Van Marwijk says Risdon has done enough to make the right back position his own.

Mrs Risdon says she is proud of her husband for making his World Cup dream a reality. “It’s been a long-term goal for him, three years ago he wrote down that goal when we were on holidays,” she says.

“He works hard every day, eating, training, it’s a 24-hour job.

“This is the pinnacle and I’m really happy he can finally say he made it and achieved such a big dream.”

Risdon was born in Bunbury, Western Australia, and came up through the youth ranks of Perth Glory. Since he was little, Josh’s parents have been driving him up two hours each way to Perth for training. After seven seasons with the Glory, he made the decision to sign with the Western Sydney Wanderers in the hopes of improving his prospects of international football.

Now the Western Australian will get his chance to make his mark on the game’s biggest stage. But his wife says she is still owed a honeymoon and is looking forward to celebrating after the World Cup.

“We’ve got a few things in mind, we’re thinking of the Amalfi coast in Italy or Mykonos and Santorini,” she says.

“Somewhere over in Europe where it’s sunny and we can lay by the beach.”

The Socceroos will be playing France, Peru and Denmark in their World Cup group stage.
