ONA, W. Va. (WCHS-TV/WVAH) — Cabell Midland continued it’s run of playoff perfection last year- qualifying for the postseason for the 8th time in 8 years. However, a first-round loss to Huntington didn’t sit really well with Midland.
“I really thought we were going to come out here and dominate. But we didn’t come out here and execute. We didn’t end the season like we wanted to.” A new year brings a new identity. The departure of more than 20 seniors has opened up positions for unproven players. And while the talents of each player may differ from last year to this year one thing remains the same: toughness. You have to be tough to play for Luke Salmons. Both physically as well as mentally. “You have to be tough. You have to put everything into it and do whatever you have to do to win. You can’t be soft.”
You have to have a mentality. If you are mentally soft you can’t play at Cabell Midland. All eyes are on JJ Roberts this year. He had a breakout season 2018. So much so that a huge number of D1 schools came calling. Roberts has given a verbal commitment to Wake Forest to play defensive back. But this year he’s going to get a shot at quarterback for the first time since elementary school. “I’m excited to play QB but anywhere in the offense that I can touch the ball to help the team out I’ll be satisfied.” “Our expectations for JJ this year: if you have all of that you have to be the best player on our team.”
Only a few hours before fall practice opened for Midland Luke Salmons received the greatest gift of all as his wife gave birth to their fourth son. Don’t worry- coach made it practice in time. Maybe- just maybe- the new addition is a sign of things to come for the Knights. “My two oldest two boys live here. They’re at football practice now but you’ve probably seen them on the sidelines. They probably know more football now than I knew in college. They’re around it, they love it, they’re around the kids. I think that’s why God gave us four boys- so they can be around football.” Cabell Midland opens at St. Albans.
