Marcus Lamb was born on October 7, 1957, in Cordele, Georgia. He grew up in Macon, Georgia, about 66 miles north of his birthplace. He was a devoted Christian from the age of 5 years old and had already become a preacher by the time he was 15 years old.
He graduated from Lee University at the age of 19 years old before starting to work as a traveling evangelist, a role he continued with his wife after getting married. Marcus and Joni traveled through the southern side of the country preaching before they settled in Alabama.

The pair were surrounded by storms after Marcus admitted to having an extramarital affair.
