Daniel began participating in political activities at an early age, which eventually led to his joining the Sandinista National Liberation Front (Sandinista National Liberation Front) (FSLN). For his involvement in bank robbery, he was imprisoned, but was ultimately freed and banished to Cuba, but he later returned to Nicaragua undercover.

In 1979, he joined the Junta de Reconstrucción Nacional (National Reconstruction Commission), and within two years rose to the position of coordinator, essentially becoming the country’s leader. He then began executing social reform initiatives, which included the transfer of land. The administration moved on to establish a literacy programme, which was recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The FSLN also concentrated on health-related initiatives, such as the building of public hospitals and the implementation of vaccination campaigns. Ortega was elected President of the United States in a general election in 1984, and he assumed office the following year. This election was one of the few free elections conducted in the nation in more than half a century, making it one of the few occasions when such an event occurred. He began to see a substantial rise in his net worth while serving as president.

Daniel was unsuccessful in his re-election attempt in 1990 against Violeta Barrios de Chamorro. He sought for re-election in 1996 and 2001, but was defeated on both occasions.
