Johnny Longden Net Worth, Income, Salary, Earnings, Biography

John Eric Longden was an American jockey who was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England on February 14, 1907. He died on February 14, 2003. In 1909, his father moved to Taber, Alberta, to start a new life. Longden Sr. had collected enough money by 1912 to move his wife and small boy to Canada with him. However, the Longdens’ train arrived late in Southampton, and they were unable to board the Titanic for their planned trip to New York City.

Johnny Longden worked in the mining business as a young man. His passion for horses and horse racing prompted him to leave Canada in 1927 in search of work as a jockey in the growing racing scene of California. Based at Santa Anita Park, he broke British jockey Sir Gordon Richards (1904–1988)’s record of 4,870 victories by becoming the most successful rider in thoroughbred racing by 1956. Longden rode many of the best thoroughbreds of the day throughout his long career, earning the nickname “The Pumper” from his fellow jockeys due to his riding style.

On Count Fleet, he won the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes in 1943, completing the United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing. Longden’s bust has been put in the paddock section of Santa Anita Racetrack in Arcadia, California, with busts of fellow jockeys William Shoemaker and Laffit Pincay. Longden was a founding member of the Jockeys’ Guild in 1940 and was the top jockey in the United States in races won in 1938, 1947, and 1948. In 1943 and 1945, he was the top jockey in terms of purses won.

In 1952, he received the coveted George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, which recognises a rider whose career and personal behaviour represent the absolute finest example of thoroughbred racing participation. Longden was honoured by the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1958. With 6,032 triumphs from 32,413 rides, he retired the next year as the rider with the most wins in racing history. His last race was the 1966 San Juan Capistrano Handicap at Santa Anita Park, which he won in a long duel atop George Royal. An oil painting of the race’s conclusion hangs in the Santa Anita Park clubhouse.

During the 1967 racing season, the picture was featured on the cover of the official Santa Anita programme. Longden played himself in the episode “Lucy And The Loving Cup” from the 1956-57 season of I Love Lucy. Longden was given the cup by Desi Arnaz as “Ricky,” but it was connected to Lucy’s head. Lucy had placed the cup over her head earlier in the day as a joke, but it became stuck and she was unable to remove it.

Instead, she took the subway all across NYC, unable to see where she was going since she had been separated from Ethel. Johnny said it was a beautiful cup and that it would look well in his trophy cabinet, but he was unsure what he would do with Ricky’s wife. In conjunction with lifelong friend Max Bell, Longden ran a racing stable called Alberta Ranches Ltd. On the other hand,
