John Stearns’s nickname is “Bad Dude”. Almost all of Stearns’ time in the major leagues was spent with the Mets. He was selected by Philadelphia in round two of the 1973 draft from the University of Colorado. He made his professional debut with the Phillies in 1974, but he only appeared in one game for them before being dealt with by the Mets as part of a Tug McGraw deal.
John Stearns scored 312 runs while batting with the Mets. 259, 341, and 375. And by far the most steals of any Mets catcher, with Jerry Groot in second place with 14. Stearns’ former teammate Joe Toure, who eventually became his manager, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to speak with him at Citi Field a few weeks ago. No one has played the game so hard as John. His mood was never bad when he went to the park. He wanted only one thing: to win. Four-time All-Star status is remarkable.
