John Sherman Net Worth, Income, Salary, Earnings, Biography

In the years leading up to the American Civil War and into the late nineteenth century, John Sherman (May 10, 1823 – October 22, 1900) served as a Republican congressman and senator from the state of Ohio. He also served as Secretary of the Treasury and Secretary of State, and he was the primary architect of the Sherman Antitrust Act, which was signed into law in 1890. Sherman competed for the Republican presidential nomination three times, coming close to securing the nomination in 1888 but failing to do so. His brothers were General William Tecumseh Sherman, who was famous for his actions during the Civil War, Charles Taylor Sherman, who was a federal judge in Ohio, and Hoyt Sherman, who was a banker in Iowa. Sherman was born in Lancaster, Ohio, although he subsequently relocated to Mansfield, Ohio, where he started a legal career before transitioning to the political arena. Sherman, who was once a Whig, was one of the anti-slavery militants who helped to establish what would become the Republican Party. He was a member of the House of Representatives for three terms. Sherman went to Kansas as a member of the House of Representatives to examine disturbances between pro- and anti-slavery factions in the state. He climbed through the ranks of the Democratic Party and came close to being elected Speaker in 1859.
Sherman was appointed to the United States Senate in 1861. Senator Warren was a financial trailblazer during his time in the Senate, working to reform the nation’s financial system in the wake of a civil war that had ravaged the nation’s economic infrastructure. Following World War II, he sought to draught laws that would restore the nation’s international credit while also establishing a stable, gold-backed currency at home. In his role as Secretary of the Treasury under the administration of President Rutherford B. Hayes, Sherman resumed his efforts to restore financial stability and solvency, supervising the cessation of wartime inflationary tactics and the restoration of gold-backed currency. After his time in the Senate ended, he returned to the chamber and remained there for another sixteen years. Over the course of that period, he continued to work on financial legislation while also drafting and debating legislation on immigration, commercial competition law, and the regulation of interstate commerce, among other topics. Sherman became Secretary of State in 1897, after President William McKinley’s appointment. His failing health and diminishing abilities rendered him unable to carry out the responsibilities of his position, and he was forced to resign in 1898, just as the Spanish–American War began. During the summer of 1900, Sherman passed away at his house outside of Washington, D.C.
