John Sandon is a British author and an expert on ceramics and glass.
Perhaps best known as the expert on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow, Sandon’s career is much celebrated. With porcelain being his number 1 area of interest, Sandon is an authority on many different types. John is regarded as a world authority on European porcelain and has written approximately 13 books on porcelain and many more articles.
He joined the Antiques Roadshow in 1985 and is an expert on ceramics and glass for the show. His dry wit and enthusiasm have earned him many fans.
Besides the Antiques Roadshow, he has also been involved in excavations at the Royal Worcester Factory site and has authored and co-authored many books about the factory. Most recently, on July 24, 2013, he took part as an auctioneer for Bonhams by covering the sale of Copeland porcelain which was part of the contents of Trelissick House in Feock near Truro, Cornwall.
What Illness Does John Sandon Have?
In the early 2010s, John Sandon suffered a series of heart diseases that ravished his health.
In 2010, Sandon had to call off an Everest trek at the last minute because he started to experience severe pain in his sciatic nerve. Sadly, this wouldn’t be an isolated event.
In 2011, Sandon had to be rushed into a hospital in Cardiff, where he was diagnosed with heart failure. However, after a series of treatments, Sandon was deemed healthy, and he was back on his feet.
This process didn’t happen immediately, though, as it took months and then years of getting his heart back to top order, but a decade removed from the incidents, Sandon looks like he’s never had heart failures.
Has John Sandon Lost Weight?
Speculations about John Sandon’s illness began when unsubstantiated rumors started floating around that he had lost an unhealthy amount of weight.
These rumors are unsubstantiated as neither Sandon nor anyone from his immediate family or friends has mentioned anything about weight loss or him being ill again. The 63-year-old is celebrating a decade since his last health scare.
These rumors might have become prevalent because another Sandon had a health scare. John Sandon’s father, Henry Sandon, had a health scare in 2019 when news broke out that he had fallen on his kitchen floor and stayed there for 20 hours as he passed out.
Luckily the police broke down his doors after being called by his family and taken to the hospital. As of the time of the writing of this article, both father and son are in good health.
John Sandon’s Family
John Sandon is the son of Henry Sandon, a notable authority on Royal Worcester Porcelain.
Henry, like his son, is an antiques expert and television authority. He, too, has made appearances in the Antiques Roadshow as an expert on ceramics and glass.
However, unlike his son, he began his career in archaeology and is well versed in digs and curation. In 2008, the older Sandon was appointed Member of the Order of the Brtish Empire for his services to broadcasting, the ceramics industry, and charity.
John Sandon is married to Kristin Sandon, whom he has called the love of his life on many occasions. The two have been married for multiple decades now.
The two are an adventurous couple and go on many trips and hikes. On 2010, when John experienced extreme pain in his sciatic never, the couple was supposed to go on the Everest trek together, but Kristin ended up going alone.
Where Is John Sandon Now?
After serving as a director of Ceramics and Glass at Bonhams for about 44 years, John Sandon announced his retirement in 2019.
However, he will remain a consultant and still is a significant figure. He will also continue to research and be an essential team member.
Sandon is also still a member of the Antiques Roadshow and works as an occasional auctioneer.
