John Ratzenberger Movies and TV Shows, Voices, Pixar Characters

John Dezso Ratzenberger, born on April 6, 1947, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, is an American actor renowned for his versatile contributions to the entertainment industry. From iconic TV shows to beloved Pixar characters, Ratzenberger has left an indelible mark on the world of film and television.

Ratzenberger’s acting career kicked off in London during the 1970s, where he performed alongside Ray Hassett as part of the comedic theatrical duo Sal’s Meat Market. This dynamic duo toured Europe, leaving a lasting influence on comedic acts like The Outer Limits and The Comic Strip.

In major feature films across Europe, Ratzenberger showcased his acting prowess, appearing in notable works like “A Bridge Too Far,” “Superman,” and “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.” His diverse roles reflected his ability to bring authenticity to characters across different genres.

However, it was his role as mail carrier Cliff Clavin on the sitcom “Cheers” that catapulted Ratzenberger to widespread recognition. As an improv artist, he conceptualized the character of Cliff Clavin, earning him Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 1985 and 1986.

The Cheers success paved the way for Ratzenberger’s foray into voice acting for Pixar Animation Studios. His debut as Hamm in “Toy Story” marked the beginning of a remarkable journey, as he went on to voice characters in every Pixar film and video game until 2020. His roles include the lovable Yeti in the “Monsters, Inc.” series, the mischievous Mack in the “Cars” franchise, and the formidable Underminer in “The Incredibles” series.

Ratzenberger’s tenure at Pixar became a legendary streak, and even in “Cars,” his character Mack humorously acknowledges the actor’s repeated appearances, playfully questioning the use of the “same actor over and over.”

Away from the screen, Ratzenberger has been a pioneer in environmental initiatives. His company, Eco-Pak Industries, introduced SizzlePak, a biodegradable alternative to foam peanuts and plastic bubble wrap.

In his personal life, Ratzenberger lived in London for a decade before settling in Vashon, Washington, in 1994. He has been married twice, first to Georgia Stiny in 1984, with whom he shares two children, and later to Julie Blichfeldt in November 2012.

Ratzenberger’s political views align with the Republican party, and he has been vocal about his endorsements and campaign involvement, notably supporting candidates like John McCain, Mitt Romney, and endorsing Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential race.

As a multifaceted talent, Ratzenberger’s impact extends beyond the screen. Whether delivering laughs as Cliff Clavin or bringing animated characters to life in Pixar films, his contributions have left an enduring legacy in the world of entertainment.
