John P. Varkey was an Indian guitarist, songwriter and composer.

Varkey studied music at the Trinity College of Music in London.

He began his career as a session guitarist. He brought out three albums with Jigsaw Puzzle by the label BMG Crescendo which were innovative and well accepted by the new generation and led to the formation of the band Avial.

Varkey first shot to fame as a member of the Malayalam rock band Avial.

He discontinued Avial and independently directed music for several Indian big-time feature films with famous productions and directors.

John Varkey started his career as a composer in the film industry through the film Frozen. His ideas and innovative sound textures made many films come to life.

He was also the guitarist and songwriter for the Thrissur-based band, Slowpedalers.

John Varkey died on August 29, 2022 at age 52.
