For more than 50 years, Saturday afternoons was anchored by JOHN MOTSON’s iconic commentary.
The seasoned broadcaster began his career as a newspaper reporter before finding his passion as a TV and radio pundit, eventually becoming one of football’s most recognizable voices.
With the exception of a brief period in the 1990s, when his friend and rival Barry Davies was selected to commentate on two FA Cup finals, the 1994 World Cup final, and England vs. Germany UEFA Euro 1996 semifinal, Motson dominated the BBC’s football commentary lineup from the late 1970s through 2008.

Motty dubbed her the “ultimate statto” since she kept detailed football journals over a 30-year span that contained the team’s results, press clippings, and squad news.
The two shared a residence in Hertfordshire, close to Motson’s club Barnet. In 1977, Motson and Anne were united in marriage. The pair spent 45 years together.
Fred, their only child, was born in 1986. At the 2018 Baftas, Motson, a loving family man, was given a special lifetime achievement award.
