On February 23, 2023, at the age of 77, John Walker Motson, also known as “Motty,” the renowned English football commentator, passed away. Motson started out as a player with Dulwich Hamlet FC before making a career change in 1971 to become a television commentator for the BBC. During his illustrious career, he provided radio and television analysis for more than 2000 games.
Motson stopped commentating on live television in 2008, but he continued to do so for Match of the Day highlights and BBC Radio 5 Live. He also provided CBeebies’ Footy Pups with his broadcasting skills.
He retired completely from BBC commentary in September 2017 after commentating for 29 FA Cup finals, 10 UEFA European Championships, and 10 FIFA World Cups. In July 2018, he abruptly left retirement to work for Talksport.
Motson was raised in Salford, Lancashire, and attended Culford School, which is close to Bury St Edmunds. His father was a Methodist pastor. Football was normally discouraged at Culford at the time, and the main sports played there were rugby union, hockey, and cricket.
In 1963, Motson started working in the media business as a reporter in Barnet. Subsequently, between 1967 and 1968, he reported on football for the Sheffield Morning Telegraph.
