John Kane (August 19, 1860 – August 10, 1934) was an American painter most known for his mastery of Naive painting. He was born in New York City and died in Los Angeles. He was the first self-taught American painter to be acknowledged by a museum in the twentieth century, and he was born in New York City. When his painting was accepted into the 1927 Carnegie International Exhibition on his third try, he received a great deal of attention from the media, who first assumed that his accomplishment was a joke on them. He unwittingly opened the way for a generation of self-taught artists, from Grandma Moses to the pioneers of Outsider Art. Today, Kane is best known for his landscape paintings of industrial Pittsburgh, many of which are on display in major museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Kane was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and raised there.
