The music world mourns the loss of John Gosling, the talented keyboardist who graced the stage with legendary rock band The Kinks during the 1970s. Gosling passed away at the age of 75, leaving behind a legacy of unforgettable music and cherished memories.
The somber news of John Gosling’s passing was shared by The Kinks on their official social media accounts on a Friday (Aug. 4). Although the specific cause of his death was not disclosed, the band expressed their heartfelt condolences to John’s wife and family in a touching statement.
Joining The Kinks in 1970, John Gosling became an integral part of the band’s sound, leaving his mark on ten of their iconic albums. He also contributed his remarkable talent to the demo version of one of The Kinks’ most beloved songs, “Lola.”
Ray Davies, the lead singer of The Kinks, paid tribute to his dear friend and colleague by saying, “Condolences to his wife Theresa and family. Rest in Peace dearest John.” Gosling’s contributions to the band’s music were invaluable, and he was not only a great musician but also a great man, remembered with deep affection by his bandmates.
Dave Davies, The Kinks’ guitarist, expressed his deep sadness over Gosling’s passing, acknowledging his significant impact on the band’s music during his tenure. He shared, “Deepest sympathies to his wife and family. I will hold deep affection and love for him in my heart always. Great musician and a great man.”
Drummer Mick Avory, too, fondly recalled the joyful moments shared with Gosling. “Today we lost a dear friend and colleague, he was a great musician and had a fantastic sense of humour… which made him a popular member of the band,” said Avory, cherishing the happy memories they had together.
In 1978, John Gosling bid farewell to The Kinks, briefly succeeded by Gordon Edwards before Ian Gibbons took over the keyboard duties a year later. Despite parting ways with the band, Gosling’s musical journey continued, and in 1994, he co-founded the band Kast Off Kinks, alongside former Kinks members Mick Avory, Jim Rodford, and John Dalton. For 14 years, Gosling continued to delight audiences with his performances until his well-earned retirement in 2008.
John Gosling’s musical genius and warm spirit will be sorely missed by his fellow musicians, fans, and loved ones alike. As we reflect on his remarkable contributions to The Kinks and the world of music, we say farewell to a true legend, keeping his memory alive through the timeless melodies he helped create. Rest in peace, John Gosling.
