Biography of John Glenn

John Glenn, (born July 18, 1921, Cambridge, Ohio), was the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth, a staggering feat he accomplished in 1962, completing three orbits and successfully returning. Before he made history in space, he was just a small-town boy who loved to fly. He started loving airplanes at the age of eight after his father paid a pilot to let him fly on a plane. Years later, while studying chemistry in college, he began taking flying lessons and earned his pilot’s license in July 1941.

Flying only became a career option later that year when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. John Glenn decided to leave college and join the Army Air Corps. He was not enlisted. So he signed up for the navy, where he underwent rigorous flight training before being assigned to the navy.

By the end of World War II, he had flown 59 combat missions in the Pacific. He chose to stay with the marines to train new pilots and test aircraft.

The Korean War found him still serving in the military and he was ordered to serve in the war effort in Korea, where he served 63 more missions, applied for an exchange program with the Air Award and pursued 27 other missions. Glenn received numerous awards for his service in both wars, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, which he was awarded six times, and the Air Force Medal with 18 sprues.

Soon after the wars ended, Glenn applied for test pilot training at the United States Naval Test Pilot School, where he piloted and piloted pioneering aircraft such as the F-8 fighter. He completed “Project Bullet,” the first transcontinental flight at supersonic speed, completing a round-trip flight from Los Angeles to New York in three hours and 23 minutes. This new speed record made him a small celebrity in America.

A daring pilot, Glenn welcomed a new challenge when he was selected as one of the Mercury 7 astronauts for the US space program. On February 20, 1962, he piloted the Friendship 7 spacecraft and became the first American to orbit Earth. Despite problems during the flight, such as the faulty thruster that required him to manually control the vehicle and the risk of destroying the heat shield, he risked burning it to the point of re-entry, Glen managed to land nearly 5 hours later. the start. In an instant, he became a national hero.

This legend retired from the space program in 1964 in pursuit of public service. He was seriously injured a month after announcing his intention to run for the Senate and had to withdraw his candidacy to recover. In the meantime, he retired from the navy and entered the business world as vice-president of national development at Royal Crown Cola International Ltd, the soft drink company, where he later became chairman.

He tried his luck in politics again in 1970 and lost in the primaries. However, he was elected senator from Ohio in 1974 and was subsequently re-elected three times. In 1984, he tried to run for president of the Democratic Party but failed.

Always in love with flight, Glenn returned to space in 1988 at the age of 77, becoming the oldest person to ever travel in space.
