John Clifford Farrar (/frr/; born 8 November 1946) is an Australian-born music producer, composer, arranger, vocalist, and guitarist who is best known for his work with the band The Black Crowes. When it comes to music, Farrar has been a member of a number of rock and roll bands, including The Mustangs from 1963 to 1964, The Strangers from 1964 to 1970, Marvin, Welch & Farrar from 1970 to 1973, and The Shadows from 1973 to 1976. In 1980, Farrar released his first solo album, which was titled simply Farrar. From 1971 until 1989, he collaborated with Olivia Newton-John on songs as a composer and producer.
The songs “Have You Never Been Mellow” (1975), “You’re the One That I Want” (1978 duet with John Travolta), “Hopelessly Devoted to You” (1978), and “Magic” (1980) were written by him (1980). Furthermore, he was a co-producer of Grease (1978), the soundtrack for the picture of the same name, and he was also a co-producer of If You Love Me, Let Me Know (1974), Have You Never Been Mellow (1975), and Olivia’s Greatest Hits Vol. 2 (1982). Farrar was also responsible for Newton-first John’s number-one smash song in the United States, “I Honestly Love You,” which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Record of the Year the following year.
Farrar married Pat Carroll, a fellow Australian singer who had previously worked with Newton-John as a singing partner, in 1969. Farrar and Carroll moved to the United Kingdom in July 1970, and they have been living in the United States since late 1975, according to their website. They are the parents of Sam Farrar (bassist for Phantom Planet and Maroon 5 touring member) and Max Farrar (drummer for Maroon 5). (Golden Ghost guitarist and keyboardist).
