Template: a number of problems A gangster and bank robber from the United States during the Great Depression, John Herbert Dillinger (June 22, 1903 – July 22, 1934) is most remembered for his crimes in the 1930s. His group was responsible for robbing more than two dozen banks and four police stations. When Dillinger was arrested for escaping from prison, he was also accused with, but was never convicted of, the murder of an East Chicago, Indiana police officer who was wounded by Dillinger while wearing his bullet-proof vest during a firefight, leading Dillinger to return fire. It was Dillinger’s sole murder charge in his whole life. In the heyday of the Depression-era outlaw, 1933–34, John Dillinger was the most infamous of them all, standing out even amid more vicious criminals such as Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd, and Bonnie and Clyde, who were all a part of the same gang. (Decades later, The Dillinger Days became the title of the first major book on criminals from the 1930s.) Exaggerated tales of Dillinger’s bravery and courage, as well as his colourful personality, were sprinkled throughout news coverage throughout his time. Federal action was required by the government, and J. Edgar Hoover created a more sophisticated Federal Bureau of Investigation as a weapon against organised crime, using Dillinger and his gang as a campaign platform to officially establish the FBI. After almost a year of eluding law enforcement in four states, Dillinger was shot and sent to his father’s house to recuperate from his injuries. Ana Cumpănaş provided information about his location to police and federal investigators, who apprehended him when he returned to Chicago in July 1934. (the owner of the brothel where Dillinger sought refuge at the time). On July 22, the Biograph Theater was surrounded by police and the Division of Investigation (Division). Melvin Purvis and Samuel P. Cowley led a team of federal agents as they rushed to apprehend Dillinger as soon as he exited the theatre. He tried to escape with a weapon, but was shot four times and died as a result of the attack.
