John’s debut movie was 1999’s critically acclaimed crime-comedy Go, directed by Doug Liman, for which he also worked as co-producer and second unit director. The movie performed moderately at the box office, but was well-received, and has since become a cult classic.
After Go finished filming, John and Melissa McCarthy, who had a small role in the movie, ran into each other in a coffee shop, and John told McCarthy that he had composed a short movie with her in mind. The short movie, God, was shot after Go but finished and issued before. It has been credited as one of the early showcases of McCarthy’s comedic gift.
John produced his first television show, D.C., in 2000 for The WB. The series was produced by Law & Order creator Dick Wolf, with John working as co-executive producer. Seven episodes were produced, though only four aired. In the same year, John also composed the animated science fiction feature Titan A.E. and the McG-directed Charlie’s Angels.
In the fall of 1998, while Go was still in post-production, John had acquired the movie rights to Daniel Wallace’s novel Big Fish after reading it as a not-yet-published manuscript. His adaptation became the 2003 Tim Burton film of the same name and earned John a 2003 BAFTA Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
John returned to the world of Charlie’s Angels to write its sequel, 2003’s Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. He has spoken about the difficult production process for the movie. He reunited with Big Fish director Burton in 2005 for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book.
John had written to Dahl as part of a third-grade class project, and received a postcard reply. Though the reply was a form letter, John still had it, years later, when he adapted the book. He earned a 2006 Grammy nomination for his lyrics for “Wonka’s Welcome Song” from the film.
John collaborated for a third time with Burton on the stop-motion animated fantasy Corpse Bride, also issued in 2005. The two movies were in production concurrently, with actors including Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Christopher Lee featuring in both. The film marked the third of five produced collaborations to date between John and Burton.
John made his feature directorial debut in 2007 with science fiction psychological thriller The Nines, starring Ryan Reynolds, Melissa McCarthy, Hope Davis, and Elle Fanning. The film, which John also composed, premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and Venice Film Festival’s Critics’ Week. One of McCarthy’s characters in the film, Margaret, is the same one she played in August’s 1998 short film God.
In 2010, John partnered with game creator Jordan Mechner to pitch an adaptation of Mechner’s Prince of Persia. He served as an executive producer on the resulting film, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, directed by Mike Newell and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.
John reunited with Burton again in 2012 for the stop-motion fantasy horror comedy Frankenweenie, a remake of Burton’s 1984 short film of the same name. He also received story credit on Burton’s Dark Shadows adaptation.
John returned to Big Fish for a 2013 Broadway musical adaptation, with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman. The musical has consequently been adopted all over the world, including a 2017 run on London’s West End starring Kelsey Grammer.

John August Screenwriting Software
John and Craig look at how to introduce characters in a screenplay and how to evade being challenged by a Twitter feed for it. Nowadays, there are tons of choices when it comes to the best screenwriting software, and one that has been in use for the last few years and stands out is the Highland 2.
It was developed and continues to grow thanks to its intuitive solutions and programming from an actual screenwriter John. But it only works for Macs so apologies in advance to PC users. Highland 2 is the Mac writing application that acclaimed screenwriter and novelist, John, created. John is the mind behind the scripts for ”Big Fish”, “Frankenweenie”, “Go”, and “Aladdin”.
The purpose why many people use Highland 2 is that the software allows one to switch between what they are writing no matter the medium. There’s a template for scripts, novels, outlines, and much more. When writing screenplays, all you have to do is think it, type it, and the algorithm formats it for you without hitting ‘tab’ a dozen times. That way all you need to do is get the idea onto the page.
They also have this cool feature named write sprint, where you can turn on a time and focus on writing. The feature keeps track of how many pages and words you crank out during your sprint session. Highland 2 has appeared in many publications including the New York Times as a revolutionary tool for writers.
In an article on the software, they focused on the application’s new “gender analysis tool” which helps writers analyze who’s speaking in their screenplays. The idea came from writer Christina Hodson, who approached John August with the request for the upgrade.
Another thing about Highland 2; it’s always changing for the better. The software continually has updates for useful tools and modes, because it listens to what writers need on set, in real life, and for day-to-day work.
