Retired American track and field champion Joetta Clark Diggs’ father is Joe Louis Clark.

Joe Louis Clark served as a school principal in Paterson, New Jersey. He also served as the subject of the 1989 Morgan Freeman film Lean on Me.

In the 1980s, Clark garnered attention as the principal of Eastside High for his novel and contentious disciplinary practices.

Clark was regarded as a teacher who wasn’t hesitant to use punishment on challenging children.

He frequently carried a bullhorn or a baseball bat to school. More than 300 students who habitually arrived late or skipped class, sold or used drugs in class, or caused disruption in class were expelled by Clark when he was the principal.

Some contend that his strict methods turned the school around, however, the evidence refutes that claim.
