He was also kicked out of the family home at 17, worked odd jobs and began his fighting career in local Toughman Contests while living with his brother Kevin, in a small property that his grandmother owned. After his grandmother died, Joe Schilling moved to Los Angeles, California where he found work as a personal trainer at a YMCA. He met his future trainer and business partner Mark Komuro while training at the LA Boxing Club.

Joe Schilling Keaton

Bellator kickboxer Joe Schilling posted a moving video in which he said he felt “stupid” after reaching out to the mother of bullied child Keaton Jones, only for her to spurn his offer of a trip to LA and instead ask him for hard cash.

A video of Keaton describing to Kimberly his ordeal at the hand of school bullies – who he says poured milk over him at lunch and called him “ugly” – recently went viral. The heartbreaking clip garnered more than 20 million views after being posted by the mom-of-three to her Facebook page.

In response, a wave of sports celebrities rallied to offer the boy messages of support and exclusive presents. They included UFC chief Dana White, who offered to bring Keaton to the promotion’s Las Vegas headquarters to “hang out” and meet fighters.

Actor Chris Evans also proposed to bring the middle schooler to the Avengers premiere in LA next year. Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, and Gal Gadot were also on hand to send their sympathies.

However, when fighter Joe Schilling reached out to help Keaton through his mother, he says Keaton’s mother saddened him. This was because she refused to accept a trip to Los Angeles to attend a top Bellator event, instead insisting on the money.

Joe Schilling Highlights

Joe has fought with the likes of Will Morris and Keith Berry. Check out the short video below to see highlights from one of his gruesome fights. For updates on his next fight, see here.

Joe Schilling Street Fight

Joe and his coaches went toe-to-toe with a group of rowdy locals in the streets of Florence after the kickboxing event. A disrespectful man had approached Joe and company and made unruly comments and advances to the women in his party. In the aftermath of the brawl, the mixed martial artist posted a picture on Instagram of his and his coaches’ bloody knuckles in the center of “The Yard” style huddle after the fight.

“I was leaving the venue with my fiancé and my coaches,” Joe Schilling said. “We stopped at a food truck. This guy started messing with my fiancé. I didn’t trip out on it. I could tell it bothered her, so I told the guy to go away. He acted like he didn’t understand English. I motioned the hand signal of a ring on her finger. I was being respectful. Then he made the international sex sign with his fingers and tried to grab her. I smacked his hand away. I was still being cool about it. My fiancé was pissed. My coaches were telling him to get the f*ck out of there.”

“He left and came back with his buddies barking and yelling shit. The biggest one thought it would be a good idea to throw a right body kick at me. I caught his kick and hit him with a straight right hand. As he went down his friends all came in to help him. My coaches were standing there to take on the friends. It was a dangerous situation that was completely unnecessary.

“I was fighting them off and they ended up on the ground. There were just too many of them, though. We jumped into a cab and took off. I cut my hand on one guy’s teeth. My coach buried a tooth in his knuckle. It was not good but it was pretty epic to have that happen with your coaches. We have been training together for ten-plus years and that has never happened.”

Joe Schilling Gym

The martial artist met his future trainer and business partner, Mark Komuro while training at the LA Boxing Club, in downtown Los Angeles. When that gym shut down, the pair moved to a spartan gym situated in a dilapidated structure that had formerly housed the Lincoln Heights city jail, with Joe Schilling being announced at fights as fighting out of “The Jail.”

In keeping with that theme, when Schilling and Komuro decided to open their own gym, they were inspired to name it after the exercise area in prison, and in 2007 they opened The Yard, a Muay Thai gym located in Lincoln Heights. This is where he does most of his workout other than outdoors.
