After he graduated from DePaul, he went to over a hundred auditions. Before his breakout role in Stranger Things, he appeared in KFC, Domino’s, and amiibo commercial, where he had roles in Empire and Chicago Fire. His first appearance was in a full-length film with Stephen Cone’s indie, Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party.
In 2015, he was cast in Stranger Things. He auditioned the role of Jonathan but he sent a tape of his character, Steve. The first season of the show was released on July 15, 2016, on Netflix.
He was promoted from a recurring cast to a regular series of the second season of Stranger Things, which premiered on October 27, 2017. He reprised his role for the third season, released on July 4, 2019. Kerry acted in a few independent movies set to appear in the 2020 wide-release action-comedy Free Guy.

In 2019, Keery is no longer a touring as a member of the band. On July 19, 2019, he self-released the single “Roddy” as a solo artist under the moniker Djo. He also released a second single on August 9, 2019, titled “Chateau (Feel Alright)” under the same moniker. On September 13, 2019, he released his debut album as Djo, Twenty-Twenty. Joe is older than some of the co-stars in Stranger Things and he revealed that he’s feeling age difference. He then told his younger co-stars, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo, kicked him out of their big text group chat. “I’m not in any big group chat now. I’m too old for that. I got booted,” he jokingly confessed.
“We got booted,” Joe added, referring to his castmate Maya Hawke. “We are not cool enough,” he chimed in. He also dished to Access about how his younger co-star Finn, 16, who plays Mike Wheeler on the show, has totally grown since the hit thriller first debuted in 2016. “It’s crazy! When I met Finn he was just a kid. When a kid is at a certain age they’re still just a kid, you converse with them in a special way,” Joe explained.
