Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland (October 22, 1917 – December 15, 2013), better known by her stage name Joan Fontaine, was a British-American actress who was born in the United Kingdom. Fontaine started her acting career on the stage in 1935, and she secured a deal with RKO Pictures the following year, launching her film career. In 1941, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Rebecca, a film directed by Alfred Hitchcock that year. Her performance in Hitchcock’s Suspicion (1941) earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress the following year, making Fontaine the only actor to ever win an Academy Award for his performance in a picture directed by Hitchcock. Fontaine and her older sister Olivia de Havilland are the only siblings to have received Academy Award nominations for best actress in a leading role. From the 1940s through the 1990s, Fontaine continued to work in a variety of roles on stage, as well as on radio, television, and in cinema and television. In 1978, she published her autobiography, No Bed of Roses, which was a critical success. Fontaine’s on-screen career spanned more than fifty years, and she made her last appearance in 1994 after a long hiatus. The sisters, who were born in Japan to British parents, immigrated to California in 1919. Fontaine was a resident in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, where she had a house called Villa Fontana, where she raised her family. At 2013, she died of natural causes at the age of 96, while still living in her home.
