JK Rowling Pen Name | Real Name

Her name is Joanne Rowling and her pen name is J. K. Rowling. Her editor requested that to be using two initials instead of her full name thinking that the target audience of young boys may not want to read a book written by a woman. She chooses K for Kathleen from her paternal grandmother. Sometimes she is known as Robert Galbraith.

JK Rowling Early Life | Life Story

She, her younger sister, Dianne, and her parents lived in Winterbourne, Gloucestershire, till the family moved to Tutshill, near Chepstow, when Joanne was nine. JK Rowling found herself surrounded by books as her mother and father loved reading.

From an early age, Joanne wanted to be a writer. She published her first novel at the age of six – a tale about a rabbit called Rabbit. Then she wrote a novel about seven cursed diamonds and the people who owned them when she was eleven.

J.K. Rowling first had the concept for Harry Potter while sitting on a train traveling from Manchester to London King’s Cross in 1990. She started to plan the seven books of the series over the next five years. She mostly wrote in longhand and accumulated a pile of notes, most of which were on paper fragments.

She landed in Edinburgh in 1993 with three chapters of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in her bag. By then she had only a baby daughter, Jessica, but she kept writing in every spare moment she was able to find. When Joanne had completed the manuscript, she sent the first three chapters to a variety of literary agents and publishers, one of whom responded back requesting to see the rest of it.

After finishing the first book and whilst training as a teacher, Harry Potter was accepted for publication by Bloomsbury. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone soon became a bestselling book on publication in 1997. As the book was translated into other languages, Harry Potter started spreading around the globe – and J.K. Rowling received thousands of letters from fans.

The Harry Potter books have since broken many records. In 2007 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows were the fastest-selling books ever, selling 2. 65 million in the first 24 hours in the UK. The Harry Potter series is now written in 80 different versions and has sold more than 500 million copies worldwide. J.K. Rowling has also published three companion volumes in support of charity: Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (in aid of Comic Relief and Lumos); and The Tales of Beedle the Bard (in aid of Lumos).

In the year 2015, J.K. Rowling’s 2008 Harvard opening speech was written under the heading ‘ Pretty Good Lives: The Fringe Benefits of Failure and Importance of Imagination ‘ (aided by Lumos and Harvard University Financial Aid). In 2012, J.K. Rowling’s online company Pottermore was released, where followers could experience her new writing and plunge further into the world of magic. J.K. Rowling wrote a film script inspired by Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, with the film released in Autumn 2016.

In addition to J.K Rowling’s collaboration on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts I & II, an original new story by J.K.Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, a new play by Jack Thorne, she is also making her playwriting debut with the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a further expansion of the wizarding world, which was released in November 2016.

J.K. Rowling has received many awards and honors, including an OBE for services to children’s literature, France’s Légion d’Honneur, and the Hans Christian Andersen Award.
