James Rutherford (born February 17, 1949) is a current front office executive and former professional ice hockey goalie from Canada. He was appointed general manager (GM) of the Pittsburgh Penguins on June 6, 2014, and has remained in that role since since. Prior to that, he served as president and general manager of the Carolina Hurricanes – then known as the Hartford Whalers until 1997 – and was a part owner of the team that won the Stanley Cup in 2006. He joined the franchise in 1994 and helped build the Hurricanes team that won the Stanley Cup in 2006. In 1976, Jim Rutherford pioneered the common practise of hockey goalies painting their masks. A buddy painted a pair of crimson wings on Rutherford’s temples without his consent at first. He wore the painted mask on the ice unwillingly since he didn’t have time to acquire another fitting mask before game time. Other goalkeepers soon followed suit.
