Jim Hood (Full name – James Matthew Hood) is an American lawyer and the 39th Attorney General of Mississippi. He was born on May 15, 1962, New Houlka, Mississippi, U.S.

Hood is a member of the Democratic Party and was first elected in 2003, defeating Republican Scott Newton. Before succeeding Hood succeeded fellow Democrat Mike Moore, he was a District Attorney. Currently, Hood is the only Democrat holding statewide elected office in Mississippi. On October 3, 2018, he announced that he would run for Governor of Mississippi in 2019, and easily won the Democratic primary on August 6, 2019.

Jim Hood Defeated In Mississippi Governor’s Race

Hood was the favorite candidate to win in the Mississippi gubernatorial race 2019 as he was always ahead of his closest challenger Republican Lt. Governor Tate Reeves in the polls. Hood had been leading in polls for much of the year but the lead began to falter in the weeks leading up to the election. Reeves also received some last-minute get-out-the-vote assistance from President Donald Trump.

Despite Reeves being behind in the polls for most of the race, he won after some last-minute help from Donald Trump, his son Donald Jr., and Vice President Mike Pence. This victory both cements Republican power in Mississippi and ends discussion of expanding Medicaid in the state.

Jim Hood For Governor

On October 3, 2018, Jim Hood announced that he would be a candidate for Governor of Mississippi in 2019. According to the Jackson Free Press, Hood, even though “known for his conservative positions on criminal justice…, when he announced his candidacy, he laid out a progressive policy agenda on taxes, health care, education, and infrastructure”.

In announcing his candidacy, Hood called for Medicaid expansion, tuition-free community college, universal pre-school, and criticized corporate tax cuts implemented by Mississippi’s Republican-controlled legislature. The decision by Republicans not to accept Medicaid expansion had contributed to the closure of rural hospitals in Mississippi according to Hood. Hood won the Democratic primary with 68.78% of the vote and is, therefore, a candidate in the November 5, 2019, gubernatorial election.

Jim Hood Polls | Tate Reeves

A Mason-Dixon poll conducted in early February 2019, showed a hypothetical general election matchup between Hood and Lieutenant Gov. Tate Reeves (R). Hood had 44 percent, and Reeves took 42 percent.

However, there is a provision in the Mississippi Constitution that may make it difficult for Democrat, Hood, to win. The constitution requires a candidate to win a majority of the popular vote and a majority of state house districts to win the gubernatorial election outright. Otherwise, the election is decided by the Mississippi House of Representatives, which Republicans control 74-44 as of August 2019.
