James Thomas Broyhill was a businessman and politician from North Carolina who served as a Republican U.S. Representative and Senator. From 1963 to 1986, he represented much of the state’s Foothills region in the House, and he served in the Senate for four months in 1986.
Broyhill was the youngest son of North Carolina furniture magnate James Edgar Broyhill and was born in Lenoir, North Carolina. For 28 years, the senior Broyhill served on the Republican National Committee. However, the party was virtually non-existent in the former Confederacy, including North Carolina, for the majority of that time.
Jim Broyhill joined his father’s company in 1945 after attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and worked in various capacities there until 1962. Broyhill was also a member of several state industry associations and a Lenoir civic leader.
