Jessie Mei Li’s casting as Alina Starkov, the main character in the Netflix series Shadow and Bone, which is based on Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse fantasy book series Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows, was announced in October 2019.
Li was initially hesitant to try out for the part of Alina Starkov because the character’s race had been changed from white to mixed for the program. She feared that the adjustment might just be the product of a diversity quota.
But as Li worked her way through the audition, she came to understand that the change in Starkov’s race was for more than just diversity representation. It was meant to advance both the character’s development and the show’s world-building.
In Edgar Wright’s 2021 film Last Night in Soho, Li portrayed Lara Chung. She has also spoken up about receiving an adult diagnosis of ADHD.
Li has spoken out frequently during her career against the underrepresentation of mixed and East Asian people in the media throughout her upbringing.
She saw that roles portraying mixed-race individuals were occasionally given to performers who were totally East Asian or white during the audition process, which caused her to feel issues linked to her mixed ethnicity.
Li stressed the importance of accurately depicting East Asians in the media in an interview from April 2021.
