Jessie Mei Li was cast in the lead role of Alina Starkov in the Netflix fantasy series Shadow and Bone, based on Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows, in October 2019. Because Alina Starkov’s race had been changed from white to mixed for the program, Li was originally apprehensive to apply for the role.
She was concerned that the change might simply be the result of a diversity quota. However, as Li progressed through the audition, she realized that changing Starkov’s race was intended to achieve more than just diversity representation. It was intended to promote both the character’s growth and the world-building of the program.
Li played Lara Chung in Edgar Wright’s 2021 movie Last Night in Soho. She has also discussed getting an adult ADHD diagnosis.
Li has regularly voiced her opposition to the underrepresentation of East Asian and mixed-race people in the media throughout her career.
During the audition process, she observed that occasionally, roles portraying mixed-race individuals were allocated to artists who were entirely East Asian or white, which made her feel concerns related to her mixed heritage.
