One of San Antonio’s most renowned and prolific artists, Jesse Trevio, has passed away. The painter, muralist, and tile artist passed away early on Monday morning, according to a statement from Our Lady of the Lake University. He was 76.

Trevio had a full scholarship to an art school in New York City as a youngster, but he was later drafted during the Vietnam War.

He injured himself by setting off a land mine in a rice field, and later had to have his painting arm amputated.

At the Fort Sam Houston Brooke Army Medical Center, where he was recovering from his injuries, he met double amputee Armando Albarran, who persuaded him to begin painting with his left arm.
The city is covered in murals and tile artwork created by Trevino.

Trevio was born in Mexico, but at the age of two, he and his family relocated to San Antonio.

He was up in the city’s West Side and had an early love of the arts. He won his first drawing competition when he was just six years old, and at the age of eighteen, he got a scholarship to an art school in New York City.
